I called it! In your face, Walter Ostanek!
So, Amy Winehouse won big, tying a bunch of people for most Grammys won by a Female Artist in one night with 5. Good for her. Back to Black is a solid piece of work that crosses traditional genre boundaries with a wide mass appeal. And frankly, her competition was crap.
My girl Joni Mitchell had a big night. Sort of. Herbie Hancock received the coveted Album of the Year with River: The Joni Letters, jazz arrangements of her work. It's good stuff, and only the second time a jazz artist won the award. Joni picked one up herself for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. If you were wondering if there was ever a category where Joni Mitchell would compete with the Beastie Boys, wonder no longer.
Even though he didn't get the big one, I do hope Kanye finds solace in the other four awards for Best Rap Song ("Good Life"), Best Rap Solo Performance ("Stronger"), Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group ("Southside"), and Best Rap Album (Graduation). Thank you, Kanye, for showing up to this fake shit.
Barack Obama had a good weekend, winning delegates from Washington, Louisiana, Nebraska, Maine, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Also, the Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album, his second. Also nominated: Bill Clinton.
